Installing a Hot Tub or Swim Spa? Let Me Wire It For You!

Go The Distance

Whether you're installing indoors or out, I've got you covered.

Sit Back and Relax

With permitting and inspections, you could be sitting back and relaxing in as little as 3 days, depending on the city or county.

Brands Wired to Date:

Wellis, Hot Spring / Caldera / Watkins, Jacuzzi / Sundance,

Tropic Seas, Bull Frog.

Hot tubs are fairly standardized - they all have their idiosyncrasies. Most are powered by a 50 amp circuit breaker, some are 60, and some are 30 or 40.  Hot Spring / Caldera / Watkins will have two circuits from the Disconnect Panel to the Hot Tub.  All others have one. Most require a neutral.  Jacuzzi and Sundance do not.  HOWEVER - I would highly recommend having a neutral wire installed to preserve options, should you decide to go with another brand in the future.

Factors to Consider

Factors to Consider

Factors to Consider

Code-complaint installations require a few things.

1) There has to be a general purpose receptacle (outlet) within 20' of the waterline (and no closer than 6'), per NEC 680.20 (if you're curious).  Sometimes we need to delete a receptacle if it's within 6' of the hot tub.  Other times, we need to add one within the 6' to 20' zone.

2) Anything metallic that's fixed-in-place must be bonded to the hot tub using solid #8 copper.  This would include a wrought iron fence, an air conditioner, etc.

3) No lights (or ceiling fans) can be within 5' of the water horizontally or 8' vertically

4) A disconnecting means (switch, sub panel, etc) needs to be within sight of the Hot Tub and no closer than 5' to the water.  So it can't be around the corner, in another room, etc.  Within Sight is also limited to a 50' distance.  If there is no wall nearby that meets these requirements, we can install a 4x4 post within this 5' to 50' zone and install the disconnect there.

Do I Need A Permit?

Factors to Consider

Factors to Consider

A permit is required to wire a hot tub. Most counties only require an electrical permit and I am happy to apply for that.  Prince William County is the exception.  They will first want Zoning Approval.  If you're on a well, septic, or both, Zoning would want approval from the Health Department.  Once approved by Zoning, a building permit is required.  Once that's obtained, I will apply for the electrical permit.  Unfortunately, Prince William County does not allow me, as an electrical contractor, to apply for a building permit.  The upside is their building office has some of the friendliest staff who make it extremely easy for a homeowner.  They have a packet pre-assembled and they will walk you through each station step-by-step.  The biggest hurdle is you will need 3 8.5x11 copies of your property's plat.  Most can be found in closing documents from when the home was purchased.  The county, in my experience, has been willing to make copies (or print them off if you have a PDF copy).  Don't let this process intimidate you.  I'd be happy to guide you and the front desk staff at the Prince William County Building Department is eager to assist.
